Green Charter School Honored by EPA

Principal Diana Pearson and Facilities Manager Lynn Landre, two leaders from Dimensions of Learning Academy in Kenosha, Wis., explained green charter schools make practical and ordinary the connections among environmental stewardship, instruction and the operation of public education during a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency award ceremony in Washington, D.C., on March 22. 

The green charter school was one of 10 EPA WasteWise partners of the year recognized for environmental achievements to prevent and recycle waste, and for specific programs that go beyond current federal standards to reduce greenhouse gases and remove harmful chemicals.

Since 1994, WasteWise partners have helped prevent and recycle more than 160 million tons of nonhazardous waste. 

Organizations honored by the EPA were:

  • College/University: Rutgers the State University of New Jersey
  • Large Business: Genzyme Corporation – MA Sites
  • Local Government: City of Clifton, New Jersey - Recycling Program
  • Midsize Business: Frito-Lay Beloit, WI
  • Non-profit: University of Chicago Medical Center
  • School/School District: Dimensions of Learning Academy
  • Small Business: FetterGroup
  • State Government: Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation/Office of Environmental Assistance
  • Very Large Business: The Walt Disney Company
  • Federal Government: U.S. Postal Service - Western Area
