Oakwood Environmental Education Charter School www.eecharterschool.com The Oakwood Environmental Charter School instills within students an appreciation and understanding of systemic environmental and human connections to promote future sustainability. The Oakwood EE created it's own environmental education standards. All standards are aligned with the benchmarks of the Oshkosh Area School District. Classroom instruction is integrated with science, literacy, social studies and environmental education. Each grade level (K-5th) uses a unique curriculum developed for the major ecosystems in Sheldon Nature Area plus units on energy and sustainability. The Oshkosh Area School District Board of Education established the Oakwood Environmental Education Charter School in June of 2003. The charter school was established to utilize the 26 acre Sheldon Nature Area ecosystem as an outdoor learning laboratory, located directly behind Oakwood Elementary School. Kirby Schultz, Principal School: 920-424-0315 River Crossing Charter School www.portage.k12.wi.us/rc Update by Victoria Rydberg The River Crossing Charter School provides an exciting, nurturing, caring and innovative educational and social atmosphere. Students receive instruction in the core academic subject areas at the charter school; however, the entire instructional delivery is designed to be thematically based in environmental sciences and emphasizes interdisciplinary integration of subject matter, problem- and issue-based learning strategies, constructivist approaches, and self-directed learning. In addition, the curriculum will be highly integrated with technology applications. The environmental-based program utilizes the surrounding Portage area community and rich environmental resources very broadly as an outdoor learning laboratory. Hands-on learning and investigative sites have included the Wisconsin River, Fox River, MacKenzie Environmental Education Center, Upham Woods 4-H Environmental Education Center, International Crane Foundation, Devil's Lake State Park and Nature Center, Horicon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge, Fort Winnebago, Surgeon's Quarters, Fountain Lake Farm, local community parks, and a host of other environmentally and culturally rich sites. Currently there are 18 students enrolled in the school. Although enrollment is open to all seventh- and eighth-grade students, special emphasis is placed upon recruiting at-risk youth who are struggling academically, or who exhibit adverse and antisocial behavior. Students receive highly individualized attention with a low student-to-staff ratio and with instructional and assessment techniques that are matched with their own learning styles. Students are held accountable to the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam (WKCE) and show Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) as determined by the Wisconsin DPI. Core area benchmarks for seventh and eighth grade are used as the base-level criteria for performance measures. Victoria Rydberg 608-742-3764 (School) Wisconsin River Academy www.wisconsinriveracademy.org The Wisconsin River Academy environmental experience-based secondary charter school in Stevens Point, WI. The focus of the course curriculum is the interaction of people and the environment focusing on the Wisconsin River watershed. A federal grant administered through the Wisconsin Charter School Association has made the creation of the program possible. The WRA is a mix of in-school and out-of-school content and experiential learning. Students will typically spend half of their total class time indoors and the other half being split over numerous outdoor sites along the Wisconsin River and throughout the Central Wisconsin Area.
